Where Should I Put My Cherry Blossom Tattoo? OC Tattoo Artists Weigh In

It was a regular afternoon at OC Tattoo in Westminster when two of our artists, Sen and Bam, got into one of those conversations that happens naturally in a tattoo shop a client came in with a cherry blossom design and couldn't decide where to put it.

What followed was exactly the kind of real talk you get when you walk into a shop with 30 years of experience behind it.

Bam: "So where are you thinking? Arm? Shoulder?"

Sen: "I'd push the forearm honestly. Cherry blossoms flow. You want them going somewhere, not just sitting there. The forearm gives you that long canvas branches can travel up toward the elbow, petals look like they're falling."

Bam: "That works. But if they want it bigger, the thigh is where I'd go. You can really open it up. Full branch, lots of petals, negative space. It reads like a painting."

Sen: "True. Thigh is underrated for florals. People sleep on it."

Bam: "What about the ribs?"

Sen: "Ribs are beautiful for cherry blossoms but you have to be ready for that session. It's not the most comfortable spot. Worth it though the way it wraps the body, nothing looks more natural."

Bam: "Shoulder to sleeve is another one I love for this design. You start with a branch on the shoulder cap, let it drape down the arm. If they ever want to extend it into a sleeve later, cherry blossoms are perfect for building around."

Sen: "That's the move if they're thinking long term. Start it right and leave room to grow."

Bam: "What would you tell someone who wants it somewhere they can hide it for work?"

Sen: "Upper arm, inner bicep, or upper back. All solid. You can cover it with a sleeve or a shirt and nobody knows it's there. But the moment you take that shirt off — there it is."

Bam: "Upper back is slept on too. Between the shoulder blades, cherry blossoms look incredible. Especially with a little wind effect on the petals."

Sen: "At the end of the day it comes down to two things how big do you want to go, and how visible do you want it to be day to day. Answer those two and the placement picks itself."

The Takeaway

Cherry blossoms are one of those designs that work almost anywhere on the body, but the placement changes everything about how the piece feels. A small delicate branch on the wrist hits different than a full thigh piece with falling petals. Neither is wrong it just depends on what you want to feel every time you look at it.

If you're going back and forth on placement, come in and talk to one of our artists. That's what we're here for. Walk-ins are always welcome at OC Tattoo, or text us your idea and we'll point you in the right direction before you even sit down.
