Small Steps Create Big Shifts
Small Steps Create Big Shifts
Some of the best tattoo sessions don't start with a bang. They start on a quiet Sunday afternoon with good energy, good music, and a blank stencil on somebody's chest.
That was the vibe this past Sunday at OC Tattoo in Westminster. No rush. No chaos. Just California sunshine coming through, the shop smelling like green soap and fresh ink, and a client ready to start something he'd been thinking about for a long time.
The Plan
He came in wanting a cover-up. Full chest. The old work underneath wasn't doing it for him anymore and he was ready to go big.
Cover-ups are one of those things where you can't just slap something on top and hope for the best. The existing tattoo dictates a lot the placement, the density, how dark the new design needs to be to do its job. We spent time really looking at what was there before we ever picked up a machine.
After going back and forth on ideas, we landed on a fish. Not just any fish a full custom design built specifically to work with the chest, flow with the body, and hit dark enough in the right spots to bury what was underneath. The kind of piece where the old tattoo doesn't just disappear, it becomes part of the foundation.
Outline Day
Today was outline day. First session of what's going to be a multi-sitting piece.
Getting the outline right on a full chest cover-up is everything. This is where the blueprint gets locked in the lines that will carry all the detail, shading, and dimension in the sessions to come. You don't rush it. You take your time, check the stencil placement, make sure it's sitting right on the body, and then you work clean.
By the end of the afternoon the outline was done. Clean lines, solid coverage, the fish taking shape exactly the way we planned it.
He'll be back in a few weeks to start building it out.
That Sunday Feeling
There's something about a slow Sunday session that brings out the best work. No phones ringing off the hook, no walk-in rush just an artist, a client, and a piece that's going to take real time and real care to finish right.
This is what 30 years in the industry feels like on a good day. Not glamorous. Just focused, intentional work on a sunny California afternoon.
Small steps. Big shifts.
We'll post the progress as this one comes along. Follow along and stay tuned.
